Dysport (abobotulinumtoxinA)
Dysport is a FDA approved prescription injection medication for the temporary improvement of frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar region of the face). It is a protein compound that acts in a similar, but different way than Botox Cosmetic (onabotulinumtoxinA) which is also a FDA approved prescription injection for the temporary improvement of frown lines between the eyebrow.
The dosages of these medications are different and experience with the use of Dysport is important prior to patient treatment. Both medications are commonly used for "off label" locations of the face such as the forehead and "crows feet."
A recent study presented at the American Society of Facial Plastic Surgery reported a better outcome for "crows feet" wrinkles treated with Dysport compared to Botox Cosmetic. Patients in my practice who have received both Botox Cosmetic and Dysport for treatment of "crows feet" wrinkles also report that they prefer Dysport over Botox Cosmetic.
