Many women desire to increase the size of their lips. This may be to correct a loss in size due to aging or to increase the size of congenitally small lips. A variety of methods have been used and include: Collagen injection (Zyderm©), Gortex© implants (Softform©), Alloderm© implants, Advanta© implants and Fat injection. Collagen injections are the least desirable since they last for only 6 months time and they cause scarring and firmness of the lips. The use of human fat, obtained from each patient’s abdomen results in a soft and natural lip, and can be repeated up to three times to achieve the desired size. Using local anesthesia and sedatation, fat is removed from the abdomen with a small needle and syringe. The fat is then prepared and injected into the upper and the lower lips. Approximately 50% more than the desired amount is placed due to the natural absorption process of the body. The final result takes 6 months and usually lasts for 2 to 3 years.
